Your phone already knows when you're driving. An automatic mileage tracker turns that into a record of your work trips, so you don't have to remember them.

An automatic mileage tracker uses your phone's GPS to record a drive from start to finish: when it started, where you went and how far. You don't press start or stop. Here's how it works in Nomo:
Set your work days and hours, or track around the clock. Outside those hours Nomo stays quiet.
When you drive, Nomo records the trip in the background with the time and distance.
After the drive, you see the start, finish and kilometres on a map.
Swipe work or personal and tap a purpose. Work trips are added to your running total at the ATO rate.
Automatic tracking records the drive. It can't know why you drove. The ATO wants the purpose of each work trip, and only you know whether that drive was a site visit or the school run.
So a good automatic tracker asks you, right after the trip, while you still remember. In Nomo that's one swipe and one tap. Not sure which trips count? See driving between job sites.
| Phone GPS app | Plug-in device | Paper logbook | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How trips are recorded | Your phone's GPS, in the background | A device plugged into the car's diagnostic port | You write each one down |
| Extra hardware | None | One device per car | None |
| If your phone is flat or at home | The trip isn't recorded | Still recorded by the car | Depends on your memory |
| Purpose of each trip | You tag it in the app | You tag it in the app | You write it in |
| Receipts and WFH hours | Some apps, including Nomo | Usually separate | Separate |
Plug-in devices suit people who switch phones between cars or often leave the phone behind. A phone app suits most people who carry their phone and drive the same car.
Any app that uses GPS in the background uses some battery. The ATO says the same about the GPS option in its own app. Setting your work hours means Nomo only watches for drives when you're working, unless you choose to track around the clock.
Nomo collects location information only while tracking is active and authorised by you, and never sells your data. The details are in the privacy policy.
Nomo logs kilometres, applies the current ATO cents per km rate (see the cents per km rate and calculator) and keeps your trips next to your receipts and work from home hours. For the full picture, see the mileage tracker for Australia. Nomo is an Australian tax deduction and mileage/work kilometre tracking app for PAYG employees and sole traders.
Driving enough for the logbook method? Nomo's logbook tracker keeps the 12 weeks for you.
Anyone who drives for work often enough that writing every trip down isn't going to happen.
It uses your phone's GPS to record each drive in the background: when it started, where you went and how far. You then mark each trip as work or personal.
In Nomo, only during the work days and hours you set, unless you choose to track around the clock. Trips you mark personal stay out of your work total.
Yes, one quick step: swipe each trip to work or personal and pick a purpose. The ATO wants the purpose of each work trip.
