How is income tax calculated in Australia?

Income tax is worked out in brackets — each slice of your income is taxed at its own rate, not your whole income at the top rate. The Medicare levy of 2% is then added on top of the income tax.

What is the Medicare levy?

The Medicare levy is a 2% charge on your taxable income that helps fund the public health system. Some low-income earners pay a reduced levy or none at all.

Marginal vs effective rate?

Your marginal rate is the rate on your top dollar earned. Your effective rate is the average across all your income, which is lower because the first $18,200 is tax-free and earlier brackets are taxed less.
