Pick the format that suits you. All three have the same fields, and the spreadsheets do the sums for you.
Two or more work trips in a row on the same day can be recorded as one trip. The template has a place for all of it. More on the rules in the ATO logbook method.
Over your 12 weeks the odometer goes from 45,000 to 49,000, so you drove 4,000 km. Your trip pages add up to 1,600 work km. 1,600 divided by 4,000 is 0.4, so your work use percentage is 40%. With the logbook method, you then claim 40% of what the car costs you to run.
Not sure the logbook beats cents per km? Compare them with the cents per km calculator.
A logbook can be used for up to 5 years, as long as it still reflects how you use the car. Start a new one if your driving changes, like a new job or a new route.
Keep the logbook and your odometer records for 5 years after the end of the last income year you use them for. Keep the receipts for your car costs too.
A template works well, as long as you fill it in after every trip. If you'd rather not, an app can record the trips for you. Nomo is an Australian tax deduction and mileage/work kilometre tracking app for PAYG employees and sole traders.
Nomo records each work trip as you drive and keeps the odometer readings for the 12 week period. See the Nomo logbook tracker.
It has a place for everything the ATO lists for the logbook method. What makes a logbook count is filling it in properly: 12 continuous weeks, every work trip, and a real purpose for each one.
Yes. The ATO accepts electronic logbooks, as long as the records are easy to access and in English, or can be converted into English.
At least 12 continuous weeks that reflect how you usually use the car.
Up to 5 years, as long as it still reflects how you use the car. You can start a new one any time.
Yes, if they're two or more work trips in a row on the same day.
Yes, for your car expenses. Fuel and oil can be a reasonable estimate based on your odometer readings.
The logbook method is only for cars. A vehicle built to carry one tonne or more, or nine or more passengers, isn't a car for tax purposes, so you claim the actual costs with a record of your work use instead.
